I folded and put in the bag of diapers - it takes up no room at all.

Tips For Successful Breastfeeding

Posted by Abbey K | Labels: baby, baby furniture, breatfeeding, home, toddler | Posted on

With the exception of birth, breastfeeding is the most natural and beneficial act a mother can do for her baby. Breast milk passes antibodies along to your child that can help with development and possibly prevent childhood diseases. Breastfeeding can be very challenging in the beginning and takes a lot of work from mommy. Nevertheless, nothing is more rewarding than having that special bonding time during breastfeeding between mother and baby. Below are some tips to help new mommies create a successful and smooth breastfeeding experience.

Prepare Beforehand

Many accessories and books are available to guide and help you with breastfeeding. Once you've made the decision to breastfeed, it's a good idea to get books to educate yourself on what to expect and how the process works. This way once your baby is born, you have a good amount of knowledge on what could go wrong and make the needed adjustments. Breastfeeding pillows, footstools, chairs, and clothing are also readily accessible to make feeding time go more smoothly.

Create a great support system with friends and family, and join any recreational groups with breast feeding mothers for motivation and assistance.

The Le Leche League gives guidance, classes, and information for free to any expecting or new mother.

From the Start

To ensure your baby takes to being breastfed, it's important you breastfeed her as soon as possible starting at birth. Preferably, the first feeding should take place no longer than an hour after birth. To keep her comfortable with breastfeeding, experts recommend you feed her the entire stay at the hospital as well. Feeding your newborn a bottle may cause her to reject the breast.

Bottle feedings might also delay your milk from completely dropping. This could cause your little one to lose the beneficial colostrum milk mommy's body produces for the first week.

It's a good idea to breastfeed your baby when she wakes up from a nap, rather than before she goes down. Feeding before bedtimes means she might fall asleep and not get a complete feeding. This would increase your baby's feedings per day and throw sleeping and eating times off.

Making the Switch

At the beginning of each feeding make sure to use the opposite breast of the one that was used at the previous feeding.

This ensures each breast has expelled even amounts of milk and prevents nipple soreness. You can keep an ongoing list marking down which side you started with last to keep track of which one to start with next time.

Give your baby enough time on each breast (about 10 to 15 minutes) before switching breasts during a feeding. As your little one feeds, more enriched milk is let down. Changing sides too quickly could keep her from receiving the nutrients she needs from the milk. When it's time to change sides, be sure to burp her before starting the new breast.

This keeps spit-up at a minimum and makes room in her tummy for a complete meal.

Correct Latching and Position

There are a variety of positions so try to find which one suits your baby best. If the hospital or birthing center you use has a lactation specialist, have her come in and monitor a feeding session to give suggestions to ensure your little one is latching on correctly. Incorrect latching can lead to many problems for mommy and baby! Extra air can be sucked in causing stomach discomfort for Baby, not enough milk will be let down, and mom's nipples can become sore and cracked.

Being relaxed during feeding times allows proper letdown and keeps your baby from feeling stressed. Stress and disruptions can also lessen the quality of the milk produced. Once feeding begins, your baby should be taking in drinks at a steady and even pace of about one mouthful per 2 seconds.

Mommy's Diet & Rest

What you eat highly impacts the milk you produce. If you eat spicy foods your baby's tummy could be agitated and if you drink caffeine she could become wired and not sleep properly. A diet based on the four major food groups is recommended to pass healthy nutrients down to your baby through your milk.

If you notice your little one struggling with more gas than usual or upset tummy, it's possible she is sensitive to a certain food you ate.

The amount of food you eat and calorie intake during breastfeeding should go up. La Lache League recommends you add an extra 500 calories daily to your diet. No matter what or when you choose to eat, your baby will get the same amount of nourishment, but mom will suffer greatly. Energy levels will deteriorate and stress levels go up making things hard for everyone.

Try several small meals a day to help your energy levels stay regulated.

Finally, make sure you get plenty of rest! Do not turn down help from friends and family so you can fit in naps whenever possible. Don't worry about the house being perfect and don't feel bad about asking for meals. Most of us have been right where you are and understand when times get tough!

How to Find Which Child Carrier is the Right Choice

Posted by Abbey K | Labels: baby, baby wearing, babywearing, infant, newborn | Posted on Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Several pediatric studies have found that wearing your baby offers important benefits to your baby’s mental, emotional, and physical development. Parents can realize the best possible developmental benefits for their children using any type of baby carrier. Selecting a baby carrier can be a daunting task for many parents. Like everything else for your family, the type of carrier that you choose will be unique to your body and needs.  The traditional sling or pouch sling is one type of baby carrier.

The pouch sling drapes over one shoulder and the baby is secured in the fabric carrier. A popular brand of sling is HotSlings. As slings can be used from birth, expecting parents often choose these to start wearing their baby. On the other side, slings are designed for a particular body type and are not adjustable, so mom and dad can’t share and if there are any significant changes to your body you may find yourself needing to purchase a new sling. Frequently, parents discover that bearing all baby's weight on one shoulder can be painful after long periods.

A variation of the traditional sling is a ring sling. If you expect to lose a lot of weight post partum, the easily adjustable ring sling is an excellent option for you. Plus sized moms find this style very well-liked.  An alternative to traditional or ring-style slings are baby wrap carriers, or wraps. Of all the carrier options available, the wrap is both the most versatile and challenging type of carrier to master. A popular brand of wraps is the Ellaroo. As the name suggests, your baby is held to you by a rectangular piece of cloth which is wrapped around you in such a way as to support him.

The wrap carrier can be tied in many ways which makes the wrap the most versatile carrier to use but also can be the most daunting to parents. Â An emerging carrier on the market which originated in China is the mei tai. A mei tai carrier is a rectangular piece of cloth with parallel straps emerging from each corner. Baby is secured to your front or back or even side via the rectangular cloth and held in place by 'tie-ing" the straps around you and baby's back or bottom. Suitable for newborn through toddler-age children, mei tai carriers are very versatile and, with its adjustable-length, strap-style design, the mei tai is easily shared and is well-suited for larger parents.

Lastly, there are the more commonly used baby carriers of today. These are almost like backpacks that you strap to your front or back and your baby sits in it like a seat. Some popular brands are Graco, Eddie Bauer, and Baby Bjorn. This carrier type is often a preference of parents who spend a lot of time on hikes or long walks with their child. This carrier keeps your baby securely held in place while providing parents as much mobility as possible.  Regardless of the type of baby carrier you choose you and your baby will benefit from the advantages of baby wearing.

When you wear your baby it is easier to care for your other children. Traveling and going out become less cumbersome when you do not have to cart around large strollers. Wearing your baby is a wonderful way to cultivate a strong and healthy relationship with your baby while tending to the mundane tasks of your day.

Crying Babies - How to Stop a Baby Crying

Posted by Abbey K | Labels: baby, baby cry, baby crying, infants crying, stop baby crying | Posted on Monday, November 2, 2009

A baby only has one mode of communication - crying. To them, everything is a new experience which they might or might not like. At times, for an inexperienced parent, it will be especially tough to work out exactly what your baby is crying about. There may be a number of reasons for your baby to cry and they might all come about concurrently, so here is a list of things for you to run through.

More often than not when the diaper gets thoroughly soiled, the baby will cry and let you know, so inspecting the diaper is the primary task to do.

Most of the time, once you have changed her diapers and cleaned her up, the crying will stop almost instantaneously Certain babies don't enjoy getting their diaper changed, and can often cry much more. Why does this happen? Whilst experiencing a nappy change, the infant might feel cold when you take off her diapers so don't become too concerned and change the diaper quickly. After that cover the baby with a blanket, so that the baby can feel secure once more.

As a baby is feeling hot and stuffy, she is uncomfortable and could begin crying to tell you of it.

Make sure that the clothing she is wearing isn't too warm for her in relation to the present room or outdoor temperature. A good to gauge with deciding on the clothing for your newborn is one layer more than what you have on. If the little one is too hot or cold, then adjust the clothing or covers to suit the temperature.

Another reason that a baby will cry is due to the fact that she is hungry plus you might find that this could happen more often than not. In the event that your baby hasn't been fed for a few hours, it's likely she will willingly receive your offering for the bottle of milk.

Try it out and see what she does.

Babies need consistent meal intervals since they develop so rapidly. It is best that you observe their intake and keep their meal periods consistent. Sometimes the action of sucking helps to calm the baby, even if they're not particularly hungry. Babies are extremely good of realizing when they've had sufficient milk, and will not drink anymore. So do not fret too much about over-feeding. The baby will cease crying once she is not thirsty or hungry any more.

After feeding, the majority of babies develop gas.

Baby's do not understand how to burp when they feel really full, so it is up to you to release it for them. Start by holding your baby over your shoulder. You will want to have her tummy located more or less on your shoulder because this will help facilitate burping. Position a towel on your shoulder as well just in case she vomits.

Make sure the head is well forward, or support the head if you are able to. Rub her back firmly, in a circular motion. This helps to put pressure on the digestive system both stomach and back, and easily results in the essential burping.

Don't pat her back as you cannot actually tell whether you are patting her using a little too much force. Bear in mind that infants are extremely fragile at this age so stick to soft circular stroking instead.

You might even discover that by just going for a stroll with the baby on your shoulder can help. This can work because infants are used to getting that up and down movement whilst in the womb. Additionally, babies are usually more relaxed when cuddled by a parent. Babies like to be carried and cuddled - in spite of some suggestions to the contrary, you can't hold your baby too often.

You could also try swaddling your newborn if she continues with her crying. What is "swaddling"? It is the art of securely wrapping your baby up in a cloth to help her feel assured till she adjusts to her new environment. There are numerous instructions on the internet that you might discover and learn how to swaddle correctly, just perform a search on Google. Just be sure not to swaddle your baby too much past a month or so as this may limit their muscle development. The most vital part is to make sure that her neck and head are not enclosed by the blanket.

If you have gone through the number of methods mentioned and your infant keeps on crying, then she may just be getting grumpy for no reason at all - we're all entitled to those days. You can have a go at holding your newborn and making quiet wave-type noises with your voice. In the womb, babies hear similar noises so hearing these sounds at this point may just provide them some reassurance and comfort. Certain babies are especially susceptible to noise, and an average house produces plenty of noise! You can even try a radio tuned off-station, so all you get is "white noise".

As time goes by, you will discover that you can begin to recognize the difference between your baby's cries, and thus you most likely don't need to run through the checklist each time your baby cries. Some other factors outside of this checklist can be happening, such as an illness or a diaper rash. In the event that your baby's crying persists and you have attempted all the tips, bring her to a physician to get her examined.

The Fundamentals To A Healthy Baby

Posted by Abbey K | Labels: baby, baby care, infant, infant care, parenting | Posted on Sunday, November 1, 2009

During pregnancy, many people ask new parents a lot of questions - would you like a girl or boy? What color eyes do you hope she has? Do you think he'll have freckles? All valid questions, but what it comes down to for most parents? The two arms and two legs. It's just the expecting parents way of saying, "A healthy baby is all we really need"."
Whether you're pregnant or have recently brought your newborn infant home, the child's health is often in a parent's thoughts. On the brightside, there are a few basic recommendations to help make sure your baby continues along a healthy path.

The baby's journey to a healthy life first begins in the uterus. Obstetrician recommendations include that a mother be in good general health, can manage any on-going or chronic health issues she may have, and stops using any tobacco or alcohol before becoming pregnat. A healthy mothers whose body is capable of nurturing and caring for the baby's development, while in utero, provides the basis of making a healthy baby.

After having carried your child to a safe delivery, you need to prepare for the daily issues to which he'll now be confronting.

Secondly, not every pediatrician is the same so be sure to find a doctor that offers a similar view of parenting as you. Most pediatricians will visit your newborn baby within the first 24 hours. During this time the doctor will do a general physical and may even give the first of your child's vaccinations. Your relationship with your pediatrician will be crucial to ensuring you have a healthy baby. Be sure to schedule and keep each of your baby's "well visits" with your pediatrician, typically about 8 times in the first year.

During these well visits the doctor will check your baby's height, weight, and head circumference to make sure he is growing steadily. The doctor will also do a general physical, any scheduled vaccinations, and answer any questions or concerns that you may have. While these visits happen often and become routine, they are key to your doctor establishing a relationship with your child and possibly catching a serious illness or disease before it comes an issue. The intention of these well visits is preventive care, the key to assure baby's best health.

One way to ensure you are raising a healthy baby is to have a happy baby.Though many people consider a "mother's intuition" to be mythical, there is a lot of truth behind how well a mother knows her child: trust your instincts. You know your child best, and you know what is best for your family. Whether you choose to bottle feed or breastfeed, as long as your child gets enough and is eating as needed he will be healthy. Whether your baby wears one-size cloth diapers or fitted, as long as they're regularly changed, dry, and free from diaper rash, your baby will be happy.

Child health and safety are the utmost important responsibilities you will have as a parent - make sure your child is in a safe, nurturing home where his needs are met and the risks are removed. Baby-proofing your home removes the risks associated with the many common household dangers. Some examples of things that need to be done are checking to be sure your child's crib mattress fits into the crib snugly, you're not leaving any pillows or blankets in the crib with your child, make sure you have safety gates installed to block stairs or hazardous areas and set your hot water heater to below 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Infant proofing your home is vital to protect your baby from everyday dangers, and most pediatricians and baby stores can provide you a complete list of everything you need to do to ensure a safe home for your little one.

Although there are many new worries as part of being a new parent, there are a few basic tips that can get your child off to a happy, healthy and safe life. Making sure baby receives proper care and nutrition while developing in the uterus, maintaining a good relationship with your pediatrician, and catering to your children's physical well being and happiness will put your child right on track for a long, healthy life.

And if he gets his mother's sensitivity and his father's determination, that's just the cherry on the sundae.

What to Expect with Baby's First Day Home from the Hospital

Posted by Abbey K | Labels: baby, hospital, infant, maternity, newborn | Posted on Saturday, October 31, 2009

How is it possible the staff has let me leave the hospital with such a helpless little creature? These were the thoughts I had the day baby and I came home from the hospital. My newborn seemed so different than those chubby babies I had babysat - and I was totally responsible for her health and well being! I was hit hard by reality - it was me who was the parent now. Yet, giving birth had not flipped some secret “confidence switch” into the ON position. How did my mother do it? It did not seem possible I could be as capable as she? I felt like I should be panic stricken.

If you are like me, the first problem is placing that tiny body into a car seat. We had bought the best baby travel system we could find. The three-in-one feature of locking into the stroller, into the car, or just as an infant carrier was quite a bonus. When initially purchased, the infant seat seemed just right, but with the new baby in it, it seemed to have grown! My heart believed she was as safe if not safer in my arms than alone in a car seat! Amazingly, a little bit of logic by my husband finally and some laws reminded me she needed to be in the car seat.

Newborns tend to scrunch down into one corner of their car seats no matter how you initially place them in the seat. My husband calls it the “amoeba” stage. You can purchase additional padded support for your baby for use with the first weeks of "amoeba life". Once home, I was torn between resting and being with the baby. Add to that her endless hunger. It was quite challenging to find a place in our home for nursing while we were both learning the process. Trying different nursing positions is key.

Some people use ring slings, fabric carriers that allow you to carry the baby around with you. This can be a great way to position baby for nursing if you can find the right adjustment for you. I used my ring sling mainly as a great hands-free carrier. There was much trial and error, but eventually I found the rocking chair to be the best place for nursing. My baby needed changing every time she ate and often times in between her meals. Newborns seem to have an output capacity double their input.

I had chosen to use Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers. The adjustable elastic really helped in the learning stage for me and my baby. Those early days of a “liquid only” diet produce some interesting diaper “issues.” Some of the biggest diaper challenges occurred on that first day. Have a few outfits ready for quick changes! Fastening cloth diapers was my main challenge. Of course they will not work at all if you do not fasten them quickly enough! Even though the first few days home are challenging, they are the beginning of an entirely new chapter.

Adaptability is the key to the first months. Every phase your child reaches will test you again. I found myself consistently calling upon all my resources sometimes just pretending to be as capable as my mother. One day I realized she had probably been pretending as well - that day I realized I was a parent too. Why did the staff let me leave the hospital with this helpless little creature? These were the thoughts I had the day baby and I came home from the hospital. Here I was, totally responsible for the health and well-being of this newborn who was so very different than the cherubic babies I had babysat long ago! The realization hit me all at once - I was the parent and was supposed to have all the answers.

I found that even after giving birth I still did not have much confidence in my parenting ability. Could I do this? It did not seem possible I could be as capable as she? The panic began to set in. I found that placing my baby into the car seat was quite a feat. We had bought the best baby travel system we could find. The convenience of having an infant seat that fit perfectly in my car or stroller was wonderful. The previously perfect infant seat seemed to have grown to huge proportions once our new baby was lost in it! My heart believed she was as safe if not safer in my arms than alone in a car seat! My husband and a little bit of logic managed to convince me to let go.

Since they have limited muscle control, newborns end up scrunched down into one corner of their car seat. This is a cute phase which lasts until baby gets some muscle tone and is more able to handle sitting. You can purchase additional padded support for your baby for use with the first weeks of "amoeba life". I so wanted to be with my new baby but also needed to rest as well.

My ring sling was a wonderful hands-free carrier. After some trial and error over several feedings, I found the rocking chair to be my best option for nursing. Babies need to have their diapers changed just about every time they eat, and even sometimes in between meals.

The output capacity of a newborn rivals even the most efficient factory. I had chosen to use Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers. It was a good thing they fit snugly. It is surprising to observe the diapering issues which can result from a diet of only liquids." Most of the biggest diaper issues occurred in the first week. It is a good idea to have a few outfits ready for changing clothes you didn't expect to have to change right away! Cloth diapers were good but at first they only worked as well as my attempts to get them fastened.

And if you do not fasten them in time…they will not work at all! An amazing new chapter of your lives begins with the first day home. Constant shifts and changes become the norm. Parents are challenged with every stage their chilfren reach. I constantly called on all my resources, pretending to be as capable and in control as my mother. Then, one day, I realized she probably had pretended tooâ€"and then I knew I truly was a parent.

Nothing is more joyous than a new precious baby in the home. The first six months can fly by so be sure to remember and record every first coo, smile, and roll. Before you know it, your new bundle of joy will be crawling, clapping, and beginning her progression into toddlerhood. We've put together some information on what to look for the first six months of your baby's life and items she will likely need in each pivotal milestone.

1 Month Milestones
The first few weeks will be filled with sleeping, eating, and dirty diapers.

When she is awake make sure to always support her head when picking her up and holding her. Without head support, your new baby can damage neck, spine, or head muscles. As parents, you are getting to know your newborn. This means you will begin to recognize all her different cries. By week four, all the hard work begins to pay off and your baby will become more alert responding to sounds and voices, following movement with her eyes, and putting her hands in her mouth. Her movements will become more fluid and she'll be less likely to be startled as her nervous system develops.

1 Month Items Needed
Hospitals won't release your baby into your custody without an infant car seat installed properly and ready to go. You can get your car seat installed by professionals or have it inspected to ensure it is safe. Before your baby arrives, you'll want to do your research to find the perfect crib and changing station to fit your life-style and nursery. Other items to have ready are a baby monitor, sleeping sacks or blankets, and nursery items like bedding and lighting. These items will help make your baby's first days at home more comfortable and make your first month of parenting easier.

1-3 Month Milestones
With the first month behind you, your delightful baby is growing more and more each day. She will have gained up to 2lbs and will continue at this rate each month. Your baby recognizes your voice now and follows you with her eyes. She most likely is responding to your voice or face with coos and giggles and has good neck control. Discovering her hands and feet, she just might spend the entire afternoon opening and closing her hands, grasping her feet, and reaching for toys.

You can begin "tummy time" by placing her on her stomach to help gain strength in her arms and midsection. This is a great time to encourage the position of crawling and scooting.

1-3 Month Items Needed
This is the important stage of enjoying time away from the house. You can meet friends and introduce them to your new little one! You and your baby will need a stroller and diaper bag packed with baby toys, changing items, and feeding accessories. Your baby will love the fresh air and new scenery with shopping and walks outdoors.

At the end of the day you can use a baby bath with calming scents to wash away the day and prepare her for a good night's sleep.

4-6 Month Milestones
At this landmark, your baby is quickly maturing into her own person with personality and originality. She is communicating with you using different movements and cries, responding to the word 'no', and can distinguish emotions in your voice. All her senses are developed and she loves to use them by purposely reaching out and grabbing objects using sight and touch, and hearing you call her name.

Your baby's coordination is also quickly maturing as she sits up, rolls over, and will possibly even crawl. This is also a fundamental time where she learns that she is a separate entity from you and can go through some detachment issues by crying when you leave the room.

4-6 Month Items Needed
Now that your baby can sit and hold herself up, she is ready for a high chair, jumper, and a baby swing. Always keep an eye on your little one when she is using one of these items and she should always be fully buckled in for her ultimate safety.

Play yards are also a great option to allow her to exercise, roll, and scoot in a safe environment. Now that she is rapidly becoming mobile, be sure to install baby gates at doorways and stairways.

A Look Back
In a short six months, your baby went from a helpless newborn to an independent baby that can sit up and crawl to you! Before you know it, she will be a one year old and taking her first steps. Cherish and enjoy every precious moment and be sure to keep a journal of all her important milestones to share with her when the time is right.

If you have a baby for the first time, it is very protective of him. I'm Always afraid of something happening to him. Well, if you're at home, you should not fear that something is happening, because it is, and should be safe. How to keep your child home safely is very important. First, people need in their homes, going to smoke or do any kind of drugs, this is your first line of defense for your child.

For new parents, baby, come with it much excitement in his life. They may seem fragile and vulnerable they are, but there are some surprising things children can do, to the delight of many beautiful people.

Most of these kids can do amazing things with us:

1. You hear it all! Children are very good to hear: You will receive up to 20,000 vibrations per minute, while adults receive only 14 000 The fruit begins to react to sounds from the beginning of the 24th week of pregnancy and the weeks after birth, can easily recognize the voice of his mother from the voices of other people.
2. To distinguish the native language and foreign languages, imitation plays an important role for children. In the United States was a test: some children recorded cassette in English, but played without sound. Later, another tape played without sound, but written in French. The children have clearly shown a great interest in the French that the video tape recorded in their native language, because they are familiar with English band. Unfortunately, this ability after the age of 6 months.
3. The conversation with her hands. Some studies have shown that children are growing, which collided with the sign language and trying to communicate with their hands. They do (as in the case of foreign language teaching) is slow and uncertain start, speak with your hand!
4. I see you mama! Long before people can say they say they understand what other. It seems that the children understand, simulate, observe closely to people. Thus, the mummy, be careful when you say something!
5. Adults are smarter than them? This is what we think. The researchers found that, as we go through life, we lost some of our opportunities, especially educational opportunities. This feature is particularly effective in the age of 6 months. Therefore, the idea that they are young, and can not or do not know, this is only an illusion.
6. I just wanted you daddy! In the early days of the new generation seems to like his father. It 'just a freak of nature: they decided that, being able to detect all the fathers of the world long before the invention of genetic testing for their children and care for them and their mothers.
7. Baby Einstein. "Maria is chocolate and other 21 19 Tommy 51 Who has more candy?" Of course, he knows who knows how to add a response. This is what the tests say: even some children who do not know how I can not add to give the right answer. They have great intuition!
8. What do you see? It is not difficult to distinguish from each other adult human faces, even though it may seem the same. However, we must, if between two similar figures of monkeys, which does not differ at all. Is not the same thing happens with children. Tests have shown that they have this capability, but is lost in time.
